More Than Hosting: 6 High-Value Always-On Uses for a VPS

A cheap NAT VPS can do far more than host a website. The six uses below are all "set it up and it keeps running" — the best value for money.
1. Long-running scripts and scheduled jobs
- Crawlers, sync and backup scripts that die when your laptop closes — move them here and they stay online.
- Drive them with cron or systemd timers; no need to keep your own machine on.
2. Monitoring and alerting
- Probe site availability, API latency and certificate expiry on a schedule, then push alerts to Telegram or email.
- Cheaper than a third-party monitor, and the data stays with you.
3. SSH tunnels and remote access
- Reach internal services securely while away, or reverse-connect home devices out.
- One cheap instance is enough as a jump box.
4. Personal site / blog / panel
- Publish it through port forwarding, paired with DDNS.
5. Automation and small jobs
- Scheduled fetching, scripting and notifications without paying for cloud functions.
6. Learning and test environments
- Practise the command line, try deployments, and break things without risking production.
A reminder
- These are all self-managed: you maintain the system and the applications.
- If you need a dedicated IP for allowlists, choose a plan with a dedicated IPv4 (check the checkout page for current availability).
